Social Media Policy
The St. Bernard Parish Library (SBPL) uses social media to create relationships with library users, disseminate information, and promote library materials and events. Library use of social media will be directed by these goals.
In this context, social media is any website or application that allows people to share information or converse in a virtual environment. “To “post” is defined as placing content in any form on any SBPL social medium site. Examples of social media include, but are not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, and blogs.
Users should have no expectation of privacy when posting to the Library’s social media. Users of all ages must be considerate when posting on or viewing any social media site. The library is not responsible for any misuse of personal information posted on social media. As with all other resources provided by SBPL, parents or guardians are responsible for enforcing restrictions/limits upon their minor children and their use of social media. Posts do not necessarily reflect the opinions or positions of the Library, its employees, or its Library Board of Control.
The Library reserves the right to remove any content that is deemed, in its sole view, to be inappropriate in nature or that violates Library policy. That includes posts that contain:
- Postings which violate or potentially violate local, state, or federal laws:
Libelous statements: obscene, racial content or hate speech
Personal attacks, insults, or threatening language
- Private or personal information, including phone numbers and addresses, or requests for personal information
- Commercial, political, or religious messages unrelated to the Library or its social media postings
- Plagiarized material
- Inappropriate photos or images
- Solicitation of funds
- Organized political activity
The Library, in addition, reserves the right to edit or modify any post or comment for space while retaining the intent of the original post and to reproduce comments, posts and messages as promotional material on its other media outlets without compensation or liability on the part of the Library. Users posting on the Library’s social media sites should have no expectation of privacy.
By posting on the library’s social media, users give the library permission to use their name, profile picture, and the content of any posting they make without compensation to them or liability on the part of the library. The library reserves the right to post pictures from library sponsored or co-sponsored programs on social media.
By participating in SBPL’s social media, each user and employee agrees to abide by the library’s policies and all applicable federal, state and local laws. Users also agree to indemnify the St. Bernard Parish Library, its Board of Control and employees from and against all liabilities, judgments, damages, and costs (including attorney’s fees) that arise out of or are related to the content posted by said user.
The library is responsible only for content that it posts. The library is not and cannot be responsible for the content, availability, or accuracy of posts by users or any other entity or for any web sites linked to or from the Library’s social media. The Library reserves the right to ban or block users who violate its policies.
